PLAYGROUP - KINDERGARTEN
Raffles House curriculum is designed to allow a natural learning approach that is both age-appropriate, comprehensive and progressive, from Playgroup to Kindergarten level. The intent is to expose a child to the widest and richest learning experience possible, ranging from academic to aesthetics, and character development, in a fun filled and caring environment. This translates to effective and positive learning values and habits.
A child who has followed through each year of learning with us from Playgroup to Kindergarten, will naturally demonstrates a zest and confidence in communication and learning.
The purpose of the brief description below is to provide some perspective in learning at three distinct age groups; namely Playgroup, Nursery and Kindergarten.
Playgroup (2 years)
Playgroup class allows children between the ages of 18 months and 2 years old an important head start, introducing them to the world of knowledge. Through sensorial experiences, children pick up words and expression, gain confidence in social space through dance, music and dramatic play.
Nursery 1 and 2 (3 - 4 years)
Children begin Phonics lesson in Nursery 1. Phonics is part of our whole language approach in English Language Arts curriculum. The methodology allows a child to lay a good foundation in diction and accurate pronounciation.
Mandarin Language is taught using a 4-prong foundational approach of “Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing”, and grows in depth when a child reaches Kindergarten. In Nursery, the Mandarin Language focus is primarily on listening skills and the initial spoken words. Children are introduced to Chinese words through songs, poems, stories and dance.
Through a variety of programs in the core curriculum, which includes Science, Mathematics, Aesthetic Arts, Speech and Drama lessons, children quickly develop communication skills, an inquisitive mind and a wide range of important skill sets and character traits that prepare them for the Kindergarten levels.
Kindergarten 1 and 2 (5 - 6 years)
Kindergarten years are years of fun, experiential and inquiry-based learning. Changing themes are integrated with Languages, Mathematics and Science exploration. As we equip the children with a wide range of academic skills, this is achieved within a creative and highly interactive relationship with their peers and teachers. At the Kindergarten levels, the children will experience inquiry-based learning through group project works based on themes, Science experiments, and Role Play. Whole language approach will include reading, creative writing, comprehension and various group projects.
Mandarin Language Arts will include Chinese character writing, Mandarin phonetics, poems, speech & drama and various games activities.
Japanese Language is a core language for Japanese native speaking family.
